From the April 28, 2000 decision of the Court of Appeals (CA)[1] affirming that of the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) awarding retirement benefits in the amount of P85,287.72 to private respondent Hilaria G. Tercero (Hilaria), petitioners Sta. Catalina College and its former directress Sr. Loreta Oranza come to this Court on a petition for review on certiorari.

In June 1955, Hilaria was hired as an elementary school teacher at the Sta. Catalina College (petitioner school) in San Antonio, Biñan, Laguna. In 1970, she applied for and was granted a one year leave of absence without pay...
