Teofista Bragat was convicted by the Regional Trial Court of Lanao del Norte 1 of the felony of parricide for having killed her husband, Zacarias Cabangahan, on April 8, 1978, and was sentenced to suffer the penalty of reclusion perpetua and to indemnify the heirs of the deceased in the sum of P12,000.00 without subsidiary imprisonment in case of insolvency, to suffer as well the accessory penalties of the law, and to pay the costs.
