This is an appeal from the decision * of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Palo, Leyte, Branch VIII, in Criminal Cases Nos. 6971-6972, finding the accused-appellant Manuel Batis (appellant for short) guilty beyond reasonable doubt on two counts of rape and sentencing him "to suffer the penalty of reclusion perpetua for each of the two cases with the duration of Thirty (30) years each which must be served successively.
