To be valid, searches must proceed from a warrant issued by a judge.[1] While there are exceptions to this rule, warrantless searches can only be carried out when founded on probable cause, or "a reasonable ground of suspicion supported by circumstances sufficiently strong in themselves to warrant a cautious man to believe that the person accused is guilty of the offense with which he is charged."[2] There must be a confluence of several suspicious circumstances.
